Why open a DAF if you’re not ready to fund it?

I’m at a Mission India conference. The president of the West Michigan Christian Foundation, Randy Veltkamp, made a presentation this afternoon at which he suggested it could be a very creative and wise aspect of estate planning to open a DAF–a donor-advised fund–even if and as one has no funds to put into it at the moment.

Why?

Details, details, details!

B____ [our estate planning attorney], L____ [our CPA], and I met this morning for our annual corporate meetings and strategy session. We discussed our legacy plans at this time. Both B____ and L____ were far more comfortable with the idea of us gifting our company to a DAF [a Donor Advised Fund] than changing it into a 501(c)(3) corporation.

They had a few key questions, one of which we were able to answer through resources they had at hand. Two key questions remain, however. (I’m sure a few more will come up. But these were the big ones that existed at the end of our meeting this morning.) Read the rest of this entry »

501(c)(3) alternative

I’m supposed to meet with our attorney and CPA tomorrow morning for our annual corporate meetings. While we’re talking about all of our structures anyway, I figured we should talk about our next steps in terms of legacy planning. What should we do, for example, with the 501(c)(3) proposal or alternatives (like the Christian Foundation of the Triangle LLC Wrapper concept)?

Last week I contacted the attorney at National Christian Foundation who has been assigned as our primary contact and asked her if she might help me prepare for tomorrow’s meeting by giving me insights into the kind of idea she has (or NCF has) that might replace J____’s 501(c)(3) proposal.

I just received her reply. Sounds interesting! Read the rest of this entry »

“Second-guessing the quarterback”

I’ve been trying to think through our legacy planner, J____’s, comment about how he is Peyton Manning and I am constantly second-guessing him, “running onto the field” and attempting to play quarterback.

As I’ve thought about it, I realize J____ has made a number of suggestions or recommendations to us over the half year or so we have been working together. And, after due consideration, I have (and I should say, Sarita and I have–we have) rejected several of them. Read the rest of this entry »

Private v Public Foundations

Our family has owned a private (”family”) foundation for about eight years. We use it as a kind of detention pond* for funds we want to give away.

Our attorney sent me some information today about the differences between private foundations such as the two we set up — one, a “family” foundation; the other, a “corporate” foundation (sponsored by the company we own) — and public foundations, especially foundations that offer Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs).

The following comparison chart is slightly modified from one put together by a cause-oriented foundation (COF) whose brochure our attorney gave us. Read the rest of this entry »
