This idea has been bubbling in my brain. I finally did something about it and wrote to a contact at Generous Giving.
Dear ______:
My wife and I attended the spring Generous Giving conference in Colorado Springs. When we heard the testimony of Al & Kathy Caperna the very first night, I couldn’t believe what a breath of fresh air that seemed: at last we had found people with a similar heart for the world, a similar sense of purpose and mission, and the kind of life experiences (owning a company, for example) that more-or-less matched our own. Of course we’re very different. But there are these key commonalities that mean so much to us and, we find, are so rare.
Similarly, a few weeks later, I bumped into a “Generous Giving”-type woman at a The Seed Company President’s Forum conference: again, so much in common; so much I think we could learn from one another; so many things we could (and probably should) pray about with and for one another. . . .
So yesterday morning my wife and I were praying together and I had a brainstorm . . . or a revelation.
I have been part of a number of professional mutual-support groups. Perhaps you know what I’m talking about. In Christian circles, lately, I’ve seen a lot of ads for the C12 Group. It pursues a similar concept to TAB, that I was involved with for 12 years, or Vistage (formerly TEC, The Executive Committee). . . . Whatever.
I am wondering if you-all have thought of, or would be interested in helping to organize, ongoing, once-monthly groups of a similar nature in which Generous Givers might offer each other the kind of mutual support that we (my wife and I, at least) cannot seem to find anywhere else:
- People with a similar passion to maximize our giving.
- People with similar abilities to give.
- People who face the same kinds of questions about balancing the needs of the world against such things as the [very much smaller but very real] needs of family members.
- People who may be grappling with (or who have succeeded in) breaking through the “50% of AGI barrier” and beyond.
- People who understand questions about business vs (or business and) mission and/or ministry.
- And so forth.
At this time, we (my wife and I) face a lot of questions in these and related areas . . . and we sense we have no one of even close mind with whom we can discuss these matters. But there may be some Generous Giving “members” who would find similar aid and comfort in meeting with us on a regular basis (even by ’phone) as we pursue this journey of maximum wise giving together.
Can Generous Giving help us connect with others? Is Generous Giving willing to help in this area? . . . Or, perhaps, you have already established such groups?
Thanks so much for any help you may be able to provide.
NOTE: The idea of mastermind groups has a long and illustrious history.
If you’re interested in possibly hooking up with other generous givers, please send me an email: jholzmann(at)strategicinheritance.com. Let’s see what we can achieve . . . together!
